State of the Birds

27 03 2009

State of the Birds
Here is another site that is a good compliment to BirdLife International and also includes information from the 2009 report on the state of birds in the United States. Very nicely done site; easy to navigate with lots of information, images and figures.

Discover’s Top Stories of 2008

5 01 2009

Hi. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and happy new year.

Top 100 Stories of 2008
This is a great list of links to the top 100 stories from Discover in 2008. It is really fascinating to read about all the advances, discoveries, and changes that have occurred in areas such as biology, genetics, environmental science, etc. Check it out to see where we’ve been and where we are going.

More science fun coming this Friday.

Happy 2009!

Ecotechnology

3 12 2008

Hi. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I know it is getting crazy busy what with December, holidays coming up and the end of the fall quarter for those of us on the quarter system. But never fear, here is another cool resource to add to your list of bookmarks and, happily, RSS feeds!

GoodCleanTech
This is a great site that talks about green technology and developments. It also is available via RSS which is a terrific help with keeping current. GoodCleanTech is part of the network of PC Magazine blogs. Check it out.

Global Warming, Public Health and Molecular Movies

24 10 2008

That’s right–it’s another random round-up of science resources on this Friday.

Global Warming Math: The Hard Numbers
An interesting look at global warming and the cost of stopping global warming from Discovery Magazine

Pathways to Public Health
A portal to many resources about public health–includes sections for educators and students. Some interesting information and points of discussion on this site.

Molecular Movies
A portal of tutorials and animations on molecular processes. Very nice videos. Be careful though, I found a couple of broken links.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, Forces of Change and More…

20 09 2008

Four resources to peruse this weekend:

CSUEB Library’s del.icio.us account
If you want to add another del.icio.us account to your friends network, I suggest csueblibrary. We (meaning some of the librarians) have tagged online resources and tools that we find helpful and want to share with you. And, if you missed the fantastic presentation on online resources for online learning at Back to the Bay, you can still see what we went over here.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Animal Research
So, in my opinion, you’ve really not been living right if you’ve not been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Of course, I might be a little biased considering one of my very closest friends works there with the penguins and shorebirds. (By the way, if you are at the aquarium and see Monika, say hi and that you read Diana’s blog.) So, the Animal Research website is fantastic, of course. Lots of great information, links to more resources, pictures and webcasts. The penguin live webcast happens at 10:30 in the morning, just in case you are interested.

Forces of Change
Here is yet another great resource from the Smithsonian, this time from the Museum of Natural History. Different examples of climate and ecological change occurring now. Includes news articles, multimedia and some great articles.

The Paleontology Portal
It seems like a lot of paleontology resources have been surfacing in the last couple of weeks and most are great. This site is no exception. Great site, visual appealing homepage, lots of links to other resources, quality images and easy to follow articles. Great source of information for K-higher education levels.

Forensics, Open Source and Images, Oh My!

22 08 2008

Yes, another wonderfully random assortment of great online resources related directly to science and other stuff. Enjoy.

Cooliris,Inc.
Install Cooliris and turn your computer monitor into a moving image wall. Not only does it look fabulous but it could help visualize concepts and make creative connections. Not to mention it is great fun.

Assignment Calculator from the University of Minnesota
Students will love this assignment calculator that maps out a plan based on the due date and subject of the assignment. Helpful links and tutorials that compliment the research process.

Video Tutorials for Open Source Applications
Want to learn more open source software but are intimidated? Not sure what GIMP or OpenOffice is? This link is for you. Join the Open Source Revolution (or just learn a few new tricks).

Environmental Health Perspectives
Free, peer-reviewed, online journal covering topics about environmental health. Also contains news articles.

Environmental Literacy Council
Great teaching resources for environmental science. Some of it is basic, but good overviews for students and a place to get background information for research assignments.

Forensic Chemistry Lab Manual
An entire lab manual full of ideas for forensic science labs.

E.O.Wilson: Lord of the Ants
Videos, interviews and other information about E.O.Wilson and his work.

3 Reference Sources for the Sciences

12 08 2008

Hi. Today’s offerings are three great sources for the sciences: a digital library, an encyclopedia, and a curriculum consortium.

Public Library of Science (PLoS)
Open access journals in a variety of topics. Support open access.

Encyclopedia of Earth
Reference source of articles on many topics about earth, environment and society. Great reference source to add to your list of online sources. Articles have bibliographies.

BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium
Share, explore, learn and use online learning modules and curriculum for teaching biology on this site. A neat use of Web2.0 technology.

Report of Global Forest Partnership

10 08 2008

From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2008. http://scout.wisc.edu/

“The World Bank asked the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) to convene a group of key stakeholders in order to consider this question. Over 600 forest experts responded to IIED’s survey or participated in focus groups in Brazil, China, Ghana, and Russia. “

This report is now available in summary and full report form on the Global Forest Partnership website. An interesting look at trying to create a truly global partnership for protecting the world’s forests. It will be interesting to keep an eye on what transpires.

Note: If you haven’t signed up for the Weekly Scout Report, I highly recommend it. You can sign up by going here and clicking subscribe.
